Fall is Here Again

Well hey friends! Been a while!

Updates:

Sold T-Dub Livestock Bangin' Rooster, out of Woodlandstar Doll, in May to a great family who will use him as a breeding buck.

The goats did the Utah County Fair and did great!! Considering, it is a very small show... shhhh. They had a wether show, which is very unusual for dairy goats, but Quigley won Grand Champion wether and Rusty won Reserve Champion. I won Reserve Champion in showmanship and Maple won 2nd in the the costume contest. She was a honeybee and my mom was a flower patch. :) She was so cute!! Well Quigley ended up winning BEST IN SHOW! Over the other does! Very unconventional, but he is a nice goat!

Chickens are all laying well and the garden is producing lots of good stuff! I'm canning and drying a lot of food and have found an awesome dill pickle recipe. It's sooooo good. :)

Ian Tyson is my new hero of all heroes. I read his book about a month ago and I think he and I are kindred spirits... he just doesn't know it. Yet. ;)

Took Doll, Oak, and Maple to the State Fair. They did ok. The amount of Nubians was much lower this year than normal. So obviously my girls lost to Katy Beukers does, as usual, but each generation is doing better! Maple is much better than Oak, who is better than Doll.

Doll was bred to my buck, The O-Y-Knot's Bang-A-Rang, just last week. So we'll expect late February babies from her. Just waitin' for the other girls to come in heat now.

I just started training to do rodeo queening from my awesome friend Ashlee Coombs. I will be competing in some reining shows next spring to get practice for Miss Strawberry Days Rodeo in May. I'm so excited! If I don't win that one, I imagine I'll try Miss Lehi Roundup, maybe Miss Fiesta Days Rodeo, Miss Rodeo Utah... we'll just have to see how it goes, but I am going to win something! I've always wanted to be a rodeo queen, ever since I was little, and now I finally have the chance. I'm gonna make the most of it!

The O-Y-Knot's Bang-A-Rang

This is Bangy, my big tough Purebred Nubian buck. I've owned him since last May and he is the father of all of the 2011 babies.

Goat Babies Everywhere!

The barnyard is now filled with the wonderful sound of goat baby cries! Dolly had a very large buckling on February 9th who I named Rooster, after Rooster Cogburn of course. Oakley had her babies on March 7th without me! Thanks to that German quiz. One buckling and one doeling of equal size, probably half the size of Rooster when he was born! I named the buckling Quigley and the doeling Maple. I've established themes for the names of my new goats. They are as follows:

Girl goats: Names of plants and trees (ie. Sage, Oak, Maple)
Boy goats: Names of characters from Western movies (ie. Woodrow from Lonesome Dove, Rooster from True Grit, Quigley from Quigley Down Under)

Horses get named whatever fits them, same with dogs. Chickens don't have names yet but I've been considering naming them things like Thelma, Louise, Myrtle, Patsy, and other outdated old lady names.

Speaking of chickens, I now have 14 of them. Four hens and two roosters from last year, plus eight chicks I bought a few weeks ago. I'm praying that all my chicks are hens! The breakdown:

2 Rhode Island Red hens
2 Black Sexlink hens
1 Black Australorp rooster
2 Black Australorp chicks
1 Buff Orpington rooster
1 Buff Orpington chick
2 Auracana chicks
3 Barred Plymouth Rock chicks

I now have two horses. We bought an older dun mare who we named Cheyenne in February. She is to be my mom's horse, but she needs some work. She's a little shy around people but quickly became the queen of horse corral. I'm trying to put her on a diet but she steals food from Red, so it's not working too well.

I have had disbudding success this year so far! I disbudded Rooster in Feb. and there are no signs of horns growing *crosses fingers*! I did Quigley and Maple yesterday and it went well. I think I did a good job. I hope!
